Cell phone etiquette at a University

Mobile phones are great things; I use mine all the time – but try to pay attention to those around me when using it in public. Many students seem to think that they are all by themselves when they use their mobile phones. Today, while walking down the hallway to my office, near a line of classrooms all in use, I saw a student walk out of a class to take a call. It was bad enough that he had to do this in the first place, but he then proceeded to walk around the hallway right outside his classroom speaking extremely loudly. It didn’t sound like an emergency. I continued to my office at one far end of the hallway and closed the door. I could still hear him! Ten minutes later I walked to the other end of the hall to visit with a colleague. We could both hear him. The doorway to a pleasant courtyard was a few feet away. The weather was nice. The student was inconsiderate. Do we now need to add phone etiquette to our curriculum? Most students now know that it is unacceptable to have phones ring during class. Texting? Walking and talking and ploughing into people… Some (not all) don’t seem to think those are inappropriate behaviors unless we tell them. Maybe it’s time to tell them.

Second Life project for MAC and Ernst & Young

Counting down to classes starting on Thursday - ready to teach them all, but something else always comes up… will have to see what it is this time.

In addition, work on developing Second Life sim for NC State, Department of Accounting’s MAC Program and Ernst & Young continues. Am really pleased with the way it is coming along. From the Times Square skyscraper that represents E&Y Headquarters to the Nelson Hall classroom, student breakout rooms and faculty offices, we are making progress. Still lots to do, but MAC program branding is started, a few fun activities to make sim stickier are planned – and next, training everyone to use it. Have to admit, the landscaping is my favorite part. Virtual gardening is great! No digging, watering, losing plants or dirt. You can change it all at any time and it can always be Spring. But the most important part of the job is creating valuable content for users that help their learning, productivity, collaboration and innovation continuing. And finding the time to make all that happen….. got to get back to it.

Having been a marketer for a long time, I know one needs to identify target audiences, develop specific messages to reach each and keep things simple. Also that successful blogs should have a FOCUS. That’s fine. But it isn’t me. Call it dilettantish, if you want, but what better way to express a lot of interests than through this medium. My professional and personal interests range from marketing, marketing communications, marketing research and social media to distance and blended education to virtual worlds and Second Life to a variety of artistic and craft activities. The art is primarily collage, art quilts and oil pastel. The crafts include mosaics, quilting and beading. Still need to get good photos to post.

So, my Second Life name is Callie Kuhn and I also use that handle for Twitter. Thus comes the EclectiCallie name. Categories will help sort out the different topics as they come. Right now, my new Social Media and Management course for NC State MBA’s is top of mind, as is project for NC State’s MAC program and Ernst & Young in Second Life. More on those in coming weeks.

Cam Studio set up:

Set region size to 480 by 360 pixels
Under options, select “record audio from microphone”

Windows set up:

double click on sound icon
under options, select “properties”
under mixer device, select “input”
select ONLY stereo mix
make sure “select” is checked on stereo mix
